Congratulations on your pregnancy. Starting antenatal care early is one of the best things you can do for your health and your baby's. Here is what to expect so you can feel prepared and confident.
When should I come?
As soon as you know, or suspect, that you are pregnant. Early visits let us check your health, estimate your due date and spot any problems while they are easiest to manage. You will then come back regularly through the pregnancy. Your doctor will tell you how often.
What to bring
- A valid ID
- Any previous medical records, scan reports or test results
- A list of medicines or supplements you take
- The date of your last period, if you know it
- Your partner or a family member, if you would like support
What happens at the visit
- A conversation about your health, past pregnancies and family history
- Checks of your weight, blood pressure and general health
- Urine and blood tests as advised, such as blood group, genotype and blood count
- An ultrasound scan when your doctor recommends it
- Advice on food, rest, supplements such as folic acid and iron, and safe medicines
This is also your time to ask questions. Write them down before you come so you do not forget.
Warning signs: seek help at once
- Vaginal bleeding
- Severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or sudden swelling of the face and hands
- Severe pain in the abdomen
- Fever
- Leaking of fluid
- Your baby moving much less than usual
Looking after yourself
Eat a balanced diet, drink clean water, sleep under a treated net, and avoid herbal mixtures or drugs unless your doctor has approved them. Gentle walking is usually good for you, unless you are told otherwise.
Our maternity team will walk with you every step. Book your first antenatal visit today.
